As a working mother juggling various roles, the quest for balance often feels like chasing a mirage in the desert of responsibilities. My days are a whirlwind, leaving me yearning for a moment of peace amidst the chaos. It’s in these moments that the practice of mindfulness emerges as not just a luxury but a lifeline, weaving tranquility into the fabric of my bustling life.
My days are filled with diverse roles — an educator with a Ph.D in psychology, a high school teacher, a yoga instructor, and a mindful educator. But the most demanding and fulfilling role of all? That of a mother. Balancing the demands of a career in education, guiding others on their paths to well-being, and nurturing young minds while tending to a chronically ill child can be overwhelming at times. It’s a beautiful chaos, one that constantly challenges me to cultivate mindfulness as both a professional and personal practice.
Mindfulness, rooted in ancient traditions and now supported by modern psychological science, is my compass through the choppy waters of stress and busyness. It is not about escaping the chaos of life but rather about finding peace within it. This is a lesson I’ve learned not just from my studies but also from my own journey as a mother, a teacher, and yoga practitioner. Mindfulness, at its core, is about presence — being fully engaged in the here and now. For a working mother, this means savouring the simple joys of a shared meal with my family, feeling the warmth of a hug from my children after a long day, or even relishing the brief moments of solitude in a busy day. One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is that I don’t need to wait for the perfect, quiet moment to practice mindfulness. It’s about weaving it into the tapestry of my daily life, whether I’m in a boardroom meeting, cooking dinner, or leading a yoga class. By anchoring myself in the present moment, I’m able to respond to the challenges of the day with clarity and compassion.
As a psychologist, I often emphasize the importance of self-compassion with my students. Yet, as a mother, I’ve found that extending this compassion to myself can be a daily practice in itself. There are days when the to-do list seems never-ending, when I miss an event due to work commitments, or when I simply feel stretched too thin. Mindfulness has taught me to embrace these moments of imperfection with kindness rather than criticism. It’s about acknowledging that I am doing the best I can with the resources I have, and that it’s okay to ask for help when needed. This shift in perspective has been transformative, allowing me to let go of the guilt and unrealistic expectations that often accompany motherhood.
For fellow working mothers (and all individuals navigating the complexities of modern life), I invite you to explore mindfulness in its many forms. It doesn’t require hours of meditation or a silent retreat (although those can be wonderful experiences). It’s about finding moments of stillness amidst the chaos, anchoring ourselves in the present, and approaching ourselves and others with kindness and compassion. In the chaos of our busy lives, let mindfulness be the gentle force that guides us back to ourselves. As a working mother, teacher, and yoga instructor, I can attest that the journey is worth it — cultivating a heart full of presence, a mind full of peace, and a life full of love.
